RUSSIAN STEEL SUMMIT

Peter Gaskell

I
t was a very impressive, very interesting event. There were five Russian majors of the Russian steel industry and they all were there, on the one and the same stage.
We, at Metal Bulletin, are considering ourselves the integral part of your industry. That is why, we thought it necessary to support the initiative of holding the First Steel Summit in Moscow and attract participants of the widest possible range to discuss problems of the Russian steel industry. It seems to me that this conference has been the most successful of all those that we have taken part in before.
Our friends and partners from Metally Evrazii played here a decisive role: the conference would hardly take place at all without the persistency of Yevgeny Shashkov, its editor-in-chief.
We hope that our meetings in Moscow will continue.

I
n my view, these two days were extremely useful. We are very thankful to our foreign participants, who attended this meeting. On their part, its organizers tried to do everything possible so that you, as Peter Gaskell just said, could hear out those, who are not only the top managers of the Russian steel industry but, in fact, are its owners since this industry in Russia is 90 % privately owned. As you yourselves could become sure, the new generation of leaders is effective in this business: regardless of a number of complicated and even hard problems, the Russian steel industry is on the rise and, as one foreign banker stressed here, "investments can be made in it with no second thought".
In my turn, I would like to express the gratitude to the leadership of Metal Bulletin, this most authoritative, the world-known publication, for its positive response to a proposal to hold a steel summit in Moscow. In my view, their participation in the summit played a crucial role in creating the wonderful atmosphere and drawing such a representative audience.
We are looking forward to our new meeting in Moscow.
