UKRAINE BECOMES LEADER IN ENGINEERING FOR METALLURGY IN CIS COUNTRIES

Georgy Skudar
President, Novo-Kramatorsk Machine-Building Plant (NKMZ JSC)

Georgy Skudar
T
he Novo-Kramatorsk Machine-Building Plant is the largest enterprise of the metallurgical machine-building in countries of Eastern Europe. Responding to market demands we timely set the course towards technical re-equipment, introduction of resource-saving technologies, production diversification and modernization of equipment that we used to make. Just in the last 4 years over $40 million were invested in developing the enterprise. Since 1994 we have annually been proving the conformity of our products’ quality to the international ISO 9001 system. In 2003 we have already prepared for certification under the new international ISO 9000 standard of the year 2000 version.

NKMZ JSC has introduced technologies of out-of-furnace refining of steel (the furnace-ladle installation) and its deep degassing that allowed it to make the best structural steel among enterprises of heavy engineering in CIS countries. For both cold- and hot-rolling mills there is a technology to produce composite rolls with the operating coating of special steel and cast iron made through electroslag hard-facing. There is a unique production site to make basically new types of tools that raise the productivity of machining works as much as 1.5 to 3 times. Our new equipment for the mining and steel industries is successfully competing with the best world samples. Just one example: there is a complex for oxygen-converter plants that contains a furnace-ladle installation and a billet continuous casting machine with the annual production capacity of 1 million tons of rolled products. Together with Austria’s company VAI, NKMZ ships slab continuous casting machines.

"We are ready to participate in any projects that have to do with technical re-equipment of mining-and-metallurgical complexes."

Works are underway to arrange production of arc steel-melting furnaces of a new generation, which combine elements of oxygen-blown vessel, open-hearth furnace and arc-heating device. Arc steel-melting furnaces have been used as the basis for developing the composite steel melting method fit for any kind of charge. In a word, we are ready to participate in any projects that have to do with technical re-equipment of mining-and-metallurgical complexes.
